Ireland is renowned as a place of welcome and Marketing English in Ireland (MEI) extended a warm welcome to international agents for the annual MEI workshop and fam trips this October.
Once again there was a huge number of representatives from all over the world in attendance and MEI are delighted formally welcome representatives from 22 countries to the 20th MEI workshop.
In terms of student number, 2015 was a very successful year once again for Ireland with a 10% rise in international English language students studying here. The total number of students was 107,129 from 89 different countries. It is this global interest in Ireland that continues to allow the sector to grow. It is also worth noting that (based on 2015 figures) Ireland is very far ahead of UK, USA, Australia and Canada in terms of students per head of population.
This year MEI has selected Russia to be the country of honour. Students from Russia have been coming to Ireland for decades and over the last five years a total of 12,830 Russian students came to study in Ireland. Building on this existing strong track record, Russia is a country that will continue to be a very strong focus for English language schools in Ireland. In a post Brexit Europe, Ireland remains a very attractive place to study. Increased currency volatility and uncertain regulatory or visa arrangements make Ireland a much more attractive place for students than the UK.
MEI and all our members throughout Ireland, I would like to thank all our guests, sponsors and exhibitors for their participation at a very successful 20th MEI Workshop and we look forward to seeing you all in Ireland in the year ahead.
